"A Riot is the Language of the Unheard" is the title for my new work on paper and a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. I was watching a documentary about the Watts Riots in Los Angeles, California, in 1968. It struck me how the imagery reminded me of the riots in Ferguson, Illinois, after the death of Michael Brown from a police officer. Michael Brown died in 2014. It has been forty-six years since the Watts Riots in LA, and people of color continue to struggle for civil rights, self-determination, and social justice in the United States of America. I have created an image using police officers from the 60’s Watts Riots, the 90’s LA Riots, and the Ferguson Riots. The other images are from Ferguson such as the man with his hands up, the body of Michael Brown, and the illustration of where Michael Brown was hit by the police bullets. The piece, for me, is a reminder of the work that needs to continue for justice and civil rights.
