My painting is a riff on the statement, “Driving while Black.” This sentiment expresses the consequences of blackness in America. The systemic and structural racism that is baked into the American experience, American culture, and history at large. In every sector where quantifiable data is collected, black and brown bodies are disenfranchised, locked out, over punished, and brutalized. This current pandemic has magnified these institutional and structural hierarchies. What is typically invisible and normalized has been made visible. What is uncanny about this moment is the national coverage that some of these topics have received. What is also uncanny is the way these topics disappear from that same cycle of coverage even quicker.
