"Loving White Mother, Black Boy Loving" functions as a loose self-portrait. Loving v. Virginia was a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court in 1967, which struck down all state laws banning interracial marriage as violating the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. I was born in 1976 to a white mother and black father. In this piece I am thinking about the poem Invictus, Nelson Mandela, apartheid, black bodies, motherhood, and the women that had to bear the burden of state sanctioned racism whether black or white.
