"When Mr. Washington Sang the Blues" is my reflection on current events in America. The initial piece started as an exploration of collage without any conceptual forethought. As I was making the imagery and reflecting, I was thinking about how history repeats itself. I was thinking about what has happened to black bodies in America across time. I was thinking about the systemic racism that permeates the culture and institutions in America and has enabled the disenfranchisement of particular populations to perpetuate. I was thinking about how this culture gets transferred into white children, which allows the structures to continue into future generations. This is uniquely an American journey.
